WHAT IS OTOSCOPE

Otoscopy is a clinical procedure in which they are examined by looking at the structure of the ears.During this test, the structure of the ear is seen by an instrument called Otoscope. In particular, the outer ear, middle ear and eardrum are seen through Otoscope. What is the problem with the inner parts of your ear or the eardrum, all this is done through the otoscope.

Let us first tell you about the importance of autoscopy.

The otoscope helps you diagnose the many cushions in your ear. Like:

Acute otitis media

Tympanic membrane perforation.

Cholesteatoma.

TYPES OF OTOSCOPE

The Otoscope is divided into three types:

  • Pocket Otoscope
  • Full otoscope
  • Video otoscope

POCKET OTOSCOPE

Pocket otoscopes were specially designed to be kept in the pocket, due to which they also have less weight.  But people rarely buy them.

FULL OTOSCOPE

Full type otoscope size is a bit big and weight has few brothers.  They are better than pocket otoscopes. Many good brands sell them, many brands and models of these are available.

VIDEO OTOSCOPE

In Video Autoscope it is connected to the computer. With which we can watch the inside part of the ear through the computer in the form of a video. In this we can also share the video by email. This is called a digital autoscope.

HOW TO PERFORM OTOSCOPY

Otoscope - Wikipedia

Before doing otoscopy, it is very important to take care of the right device and the comfort of the patient.

The ear canal of young children is still small. A small speculum should be selected for the study.

At the time of examination, special care should also be taken of the patient’s sitting position.

Although it is recommended to hold a pen for autoscopy, you can do it however you are comfortable holding it that way.

When you are checking the left ear, then there should be auto-scope in the left hand and autoscope should be in the right hand if you are checking the right ear.

Autoscopying the ears of childrens is difficult and requires great care. Small children’s ear canal is still small, when putting the speculum in their ear, they themselves should be more careful.

Now what should we take care of that no harm should be done to his ear. The patient should also keep his car in the right direction and not go looking for more.  Otherwise it may cause injury to you. Therefore, a careful Otoscopy can also give good results.

PARTS OF OTOSCOPE

Otoscope-Overview

Let’s know about some parts of Otoscopy and then it is fitted with a single light and a lens is attached so that we can see the structure of the ears in enough light and large view. We cannot see this structure due to the ear canal or being very thin. The Otoscope has two parts: Head and Handle!

HEAD

It has a handle to hold the Otoscope, through which we and those who hold it can easily examine the mine. Different types of otoscopes have different designs of handles that help in holding them.

HANDLE

To see the inside of the ear, we use its head.  Speculum is used for this. There are many different sizes of speculums.  Some sizes are small and some sizes are big.  For younger children a smaller size speculum is inserted into the ear and for adults a larger speculum is inserted into the ear.It is only through the speculum that we can easily see the structure inside the ear.

RISKS IN OTOSCOPY

  • A typical part of an autoscopy may be for the doctor to observe!
  • Inspect the external auditory canal- some hair often with yellow to brown cerumen.
  • Evaluate tympanic membrane:
  • Color- red, white, yellow
  • Translucent- transparent or opaque
  • Position of the drum- retracted, natural, bulging.

RESULTS OF OTOSCOPY

NORMAL FINDINGS

Ear canal has hair follicles, yellow to brown cerumen

ABNORMAL FINDINGS

When inspecting external auditory canal-

  • Otitis Externa When inspecting external auditory canal: Tenderness or pulling auricle or canal is swollen, narrowed, moiset, with pus it can be named otitis externa.
  • Yellow to brown sticky to hard cerumen and obscuring eardrum by ear wax or foregin body in the canal.

Abnormalities in ear drum-

  • Acute otitis media- Color of the eardrum is red and has a loss of landmarks.
  • Bulging of eardrum is indicative of acute otitis media.
  • Retracted eardrum is indicative of Tympanosclerosis.
  • Hole in the tympanic membrane is abnormal and it is called perforation

SEFTY MEASURE WHILE USE THE OTOSCOPE

  • Check the ear of patients
  • Listen for the patients complaints
  • Trying putting the otoscope gradually into the ear, while looking through.
  • Take care you do not shake or get hit by someone while performing the Otoscopy.
  • Wash your hands and wear a mask for otoscopic examinations.
  • Clean speculum before and after the use of Otoscopy as the infection one patient can infect others.
